Becoming Kings

Becoming Kings Podcast is for any man pursuing greater abundance and fulfillment in life, especially when he knows he’s not living up to his greatest potential. “What does it take to be powerful, purpose-driven and fulfilled?” It means becoming a King. It means doing the difficult work of breaking down the old masculine paradigms and becoming whole, healthy, and trustworthy. In order for men to move into this King energy, they need a guide. A way out of the old ways of being a man of oppression, repression, and aggression and instead, walking a path toward becoming a King; a man of strength, clarity, and fulfillment. This podcast is that guide and it starts here!

Why Making Assumptions Can Wreak Havoc

You know what they say about (ass)umptions…

Have you ever thought about how you deal with uncertainty? When we get nervous or afraid of certain outcomes these feelings start to drive our actions in really confusing ways. In the moment they make sense, sure, however in retrospect…

Not so much.

I’ve seen these behaviors come out fairly consistently when it comes to dating; which has a knack for pushing almost everyone’s “control” buttons.

My buddy was expressing concern and making assumptions about how his budding relationship was going, so I sat him down and told him a story.

A few stories in fact: about how I tended to blow up every relationship after my divorce because of all the assumptions I’d make. This time on The Johnny King Show, we’re digging into relationships, assumptions, and the perils of online dating.

In this episode you’ll learn about…

  • The Four Agreements. (1:38)
  • Ghosting. (3:22)
  • Playing that field. (6:23)
  • Suppressing painful emotions. (9:56)
  • Growth comes when the pressure is on. (13:19)
  • You just never know what can happen. (15:21)

Pain and Conflict Resolution with Anu Lawrence

Alignment, balance, and healing the body.

Most of the time, our bodily injuries have more to do with what’s already faltering, rather than whatever fall, impact, or sprain caused it in the first place. And my guest, Anu Lawrence, is the master in helping people find out the crux of the problem.

He’s the owner of Egoscue, a practice that helps people overcome chronic pain and musculoskeletal problems without medicine or costly medical bills. Anu’s aim is to treat the body and mind by treating the problem, not the symptom—most pain is caused by something being out of alignment.

The tech they use can help identify where you’re overcompensating for something else in your body.

From there, Anu can recommend specialized exercises and stretches to put the body back in alignment with itself. For example, someone going through his process might find out the reason they deal with a lot of pain on the left side of their body is a result of the right side being too tight.

Participating in designed recovery can alleviate that and impact every area of your life. This approach to healing isn’t just for the body, it’s for the mind, soul, and emotions.

In this interview, Anu and I sit down and go deep into the nature of healing, and how alleviating pain in every area of our lives can bring the wholeness and healing we seek.

In this episode you’ll learn about…

  • What is the Egoscue Method? (2:47)
  • Working with Pete Egoscue. (11:27)
  • The cost of “being broken”. (22:51)
  • Selflessness & win-win’s. (34:00)
  • Celebrating his wins. (45:51)
  • Little moments of intentionality. (56:13)
  • It’s the absence of limitation. (1:04:53)

Infuse A Little Spontaneity

It’s Christmas in July!

Growing up as a Christian Scientist meant I was taught to never drink, do drugs, or do anything that would alter my state of mind.

So naturally, my friends and I went buck wild without help. Doing all the crazy things we did as teenagers gave me a deeper appreciation for something a lot of adults I know forget to integrate into their lives:

Spontaneity!

Doing things because you can. Living in the moment. Too often we rely on stuff or things to bring that sense to life and honestly, it’s way more fun to get out of your comfort zone and go for it.

Whatever “it” is, do it for the sake of spicing up life. In this episode of The Johnny King Show, I’m going to share a bit about my teen years and how you can get a little more out of life by leaning into the moment.

In this episode you’ll learn about…

  • The Power of the Internet. (0:54)
  • Miniature snowmen. (3:36)
  • What to do when you don’t drink. (7:00)
  • Post-it notes are the best! (9:47)
  • Let’s make things more exciting! (12:20)
  • How can you infuse a little spontaneity? (14:32)

Do You Desire to Be Tested?

Seeking out challenges to prove your manhood.

I used to be a pretty intense guy in my 20s. I was all-in with the gym, new experiences, and even love letters to girls.

For the longest time, I couldn’t figure out why I was so motivated to be like this, and recently it finally dawned on me… I was constantly looking for ways to prove my manhood to myself and others, so I could make up for my “father wound.”

Anyway, this instinct to be super intense about everything led to me issuing a grand proclamation to the girl of my—recent—dreams when I was younger… and it didn’t really land. She laughed it off and next thing I knew, she was gone.

Today though, things are different. I’m still intense, however I’ve learned how to seek challenges and become “battle tested” for my own satisfaction rather than to prove something to other people!

With this episode of The Johnny King Show, you’ll learn how I failed miserably wooing a girl, and how that showed me a better path to embrace my manhood.

In this episode you’ll learn about…

  • Wisdom from my man, Chance. (0:46)
  • Why are some men drawn towards war? (3:28)
  • How to “woo” a woman. haha (6:24)
  • A desire for boys to know if they have what it takes. (9:36)
  • Get involved with other men and seek adventure. (12:13)

Braveheart and Fatherhood

It’s all about the father-son relationships.

I used to think Braveheart was a story about love, revenge, and war.

It is about that and it also isn’t really about that… there’s a subtextual story I totally missed for years! It’s a story driven by familial relationships and how they drive people to do certain things—if you haven’t seen the movie there will be some spoiler in the episode.

After thinking about the actions of a lot of the characters in the film, I realized just how much of our lives are impacted by our parents. Most of our behaviors are shaped by the relationships we have, or had with them, and figuring out what those are can be huge for our personal development.

For me, I had to come to terms with my father and a lot of the ways he acted in my life because of his own problems.

I also had to overcome some hurdles after the passing of my mother, working to understand our relationship and how that informed how I acted with and around women. Doing this work is so important because it can save future generations a lot of stress, and also helps us put down some seriously heavy burdens.

In this episode of The Johnny King Show, we’re talking parents, movies, and a whole lot more.

In this episode you’ll learn about…

  • When things go wrong. (0:32)
  • The underlying fatherhood storyline. (3:08)
  • Hamish and his old man. (6:08)
  • Father and son relationship depiction. (9:29)
  • Resolving past pains from mom or dad. (12:23)

One of Your Greatest Assets

You may not have resources… yet you can be resourceful.

Fear is one of the biggest, most primal emotions we experience. And many of us may think we need more tools, resources, or information to deal with it.

As it turns out, some of us may need more wisdom to solve our problems. Others may need to think outside the box, especially when it comes to discovering what’s really necessary for success.

As someone who has started a few successful businesses in my time, I wanted to use this episode to reflect on what it takes to get off the ground… Especially because a lot of listeners are aspiring business owners and entrepreneurs.

Back when I was first starting my first gym, I didn’t have a single member. Like, it was actually pretty embarrassing (at the time), and right before I was ready to throw in the towel, I started working some new angles. Before I knew it, I was getting my first members.

And for a moment, I almost botched the whole thing. My temptation was to make up for not having the same resources as everyone else, and having learned from before, I took a step back.

It turned out I had something else that other gyms didn’t.

On this episode of The Johnny King Show, we’re taking a look at the past so you can discover one of your greatest tools you didn’t know you had!

In this episode you’ll learn about…

  • Courage goes a long way. (0:34)
  • What you need to get started. (4:21)
  • When marketing, 35% show-rate is good! (8:40)
  • Inspiration comes from taking action. (12:04)
  • Take action and rely on being resourceful. (16:48)
  • Wisdom over information. Mentorship over assets. (19:46)

The Importance of Finding Your True North with Steve Crawford

Supporting others, integrity, and the path forward.

With three degrees, a glowing career as a member of the Marine Corps., and pretty much anything he could ever ask for, Steve sees life differently. Rather than letting his life go to his head he remains grounded, because even now, his mission is to do valuable work for others and support them.

In fact, you can hear it in the way he talks. His cadence, tone, and overall delivery is measured, compassionate, and authoritative—Steve knows what he’s talking about, yet he’s willing to meet people where they’re at.

And because he’s a consultant who serves teams and individuals looking for the tools they need to succeed, he had a lot to share in this episode.

One of the words that continually came up in our conversation was integrity. For him, it’s not just a matter of following through, it’s about doubling down on action and being above reproach. As men, our word should never be in question, and we can accomplish this by setting a north star; something that’s visible to us and drives us to action.

The beauty of having a north star is that it guides when the journey feels long, or when a rough patch slows us down. If you want to learn how to develop your north star, you’ll want to listen to this interview with Steve Crawford!

In this episode you’ll learn about…

  • Background of Steve Crawford. (0:58)
  • Seek what fulfills you most. (10:41)
  • What is it you REALLY want to do? (21:48)
  • Making meaning of events. (31:59)
  • Setting up your north star. (41:51)

How to Improve the Quality of Your Life

Asking the right questions.

I’ve got a little secret you need to know about… Ignorance isn’t bliss.

No, this isn’t quite a plug to ask more questions. It’s about asking better questions. For example, when I interview a guest, I try to stay away from yes or no questions, because they don’t give my guest the chance to share a story.

In the same way, when you look at your life, only asking surface level questions won’t reveal important information, nor will they challenge you to grow. We were given the gift of curiosity for a reason, why not put it to good use?

And see, that’s it isn’t it. Sometimes the questions we ask don’t take us to good places. While you may resist questioning too deeply because it hurts, remember that that pain is just being ignored when you don’t ask—the pain is still affecting you.

Likewise, what about all that good stuff underneath the bad? Sometimes we gotta go deep to find the riches of our lives.

This time on The Johnny King Show, we’re going to talk about the quality of your life, and how asking the right questions can drastically improve it.

In this episode you’ll learn about…

  • A statement that changed everything. (1:03)
  • Your brain is constantly judging. (4:21)
  • Constant questioning. (7:32)
  • What accomplishments are important to you? (10:40)
  • Can you change the story? (13:36)
  • Take the challenge. (16:07)

Feeling Stuck? Try This!

Acknowledging your ideals.

One of the number one reasons the people I work with feel stuck is they don’t understand how to reframe or get creative with achieving the things they want. And do you know what some of the biggest excuses are?

Family. Past choices. Careers.

Women I coached would often tell me about unsupportive spouses when it came to kids. Men would tell me about unwanted weight gain. Yet, when I’d ask them about implementing change, they’d always come back to family, choices, or dead-end careers.

Many of these things are standing in the way, however when we shift our angles on the problem, they no longer have to. Enrolling an unsupportive spouse to take action is possible. Achieving desires while also getting weight under control is possible. It all starts with being honest, and having vulnerable conversations.

The objective is to get unstuck, and those conversations get the ball rolling. So what’s this tip to getting unstuck? You’ll need to listen to this episode to find out the sure-fire way to get unstuck.

In this episode you’ll learn about…

  • Adverse to seeking your dreams? (1:27)
  • Coping mechanisms. (4:00)
  • Getting stuck. (6:29)
  • How do you get unstuck? (8:48)
  • Pursuing what is uncomfortable. (11:53)
