Becoming Kings
Becoming Kings Podcast is for any man pursuing greater abundance and fulfillment in life, especially when he knows he’s not living up to his greatest potential. “What does it take to be powerful, purpose-driven and fulfilled?” It means becoming a King. Oh man, it’s been a while since a “story time with Johnny,” episode.
And boy, do I have an episode for you.

When everything seemed to be going wrong I stepped up to save the day. Unfortunately, what happened next may have spoiled my chances. Kick back with another story from my teen years where everyone is laughing at me because I got in my own head.

Igniting Your Inner Fire with Sanyika “The Firestarter”
A writer trapped in the body of an NFL player.
Sanyika is unlike any man I’ve met before. Intense in his energy, and also kind. Articulate in his beliefs, and ruthless in pushing others to understand. If there were ever many who was a firestarter, it’s him.
Sanyika is a writer, and storyteller, which makes him uniquely situated to call out men on their BS stories.
Some of you have been waiting for an episode like this. It’s raw, no-holds-barred, straight-shooting truth bombs from beginning to end. When it comes to identity, it’s quite simple for Sanyika. Either we face down our future selves and become them, or keep up the posturing and stalling. Step up, or run.
In fact, that’s the theme he embodies: do it or don’t, no excuses. No fear. And with a year that has encouraged rampant passivity this is the exact message we need going into the new year.
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- Intentionality. (2:23)
- “All in” to the tunnel. (11:07)
- Being a man of your word. (22:07)
- Emotion vs Feeling. (31:50)
- When Sanyika was asked to stop using his name. (41:50)
- Shame and guilt vs a new possibility. (49:31)

Overcoming Learned Helplessness
The disciplined pursuit of less.
Have you ever felt paralyzed by the number of choices you can make? I often find that when my clients say they struggle to make choices in their free time, it’s not because there’s nothing to do rather, there’s everything to do.
It’s why I sometimes find myself glued to social media. With so many possibilities it’s easier to essentially do nothing with our time, than one thing that would be good for us.
And so, we begin to experience choice fatigue.
What’s the remedy to this massive productivity killer? Well, it starts with one thing: limiting your choices so that you have a clear path forward. For some that might look like getting clear about your preferred hobby and not overcomplicating the process to get there.
For others… Well, we’ll uncover that in the episode. Listen with me to uncover the remedy of choice fatigue, so you can overcome your passivity in life.
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- Less is more. (0:57)
- Choice fatigue = overwhelm. (3:39)
- F.I.N.E. = Feelings Internalized Never Expressed. (7:42)
- Learned helplessness. (11:10)
- How to overcome learned helplessness. (14:09)

Rediscovering the Mature Masculine
Be a king, warrior, magician, and lover.
I’ve been reading this book recently by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette titled King, Warrior, Magician, Lover. It’s all about rediscovering a masculine maturity we’ve seemed to have lost as the world has developed.
If you’ve been listening for even a few episodes, you know how much this issue matters to me. In case you haven’t been with me for a while, I believe many of us have some sort of “father wound,” which informs much of the insecurity and anxiety we experience as men (and women).
When we don’t break that cycle, we pass it on, and our offspring do the same. The good news, it CAN stop with us. Over the years I’ve addressed the wounds, and gotten clear with my father about what happened because of our relationship.
In this episode of TJKS, we’re digging into some excerpts from Moore and Gillette’s book, to find out what we can do to understand why the world needs more mature, masculine men.
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- King, Warrior, Magician, Lover. (1:09)
- Gender confusion. (4:26)
- Coming to age ritual. (8:37)
- We need more “mature masculine” men. (13:12)
- Effective blaming. (16:32)
- Create leverage by joining a men’s book club. (19:18)

The Art of Hunting with James Kircher
What does it mean to be a hunter?
Why hunt when we can shop for meat at the store or local butcher? Why take the life of an animal for sport? Despite the air of cruelty that we’re often told hunting has, my good friend James has a different take: when done purposefully hunting is an art, an act of respect to nature.
And while it certainly is NOT a necessity, it’s been passed down to him through generations. It’s a survival skill he holds dear and will continue to pass down… plus James likes to know where his food is coming from. We’re recording this episode on the way back from an (unsuccessful) antelope hunt, and we both have many thoughts on the experience.
So, who is James, exactly? Well he’s a coach for dads and hunters (or anyone who wants to step into that way of life). He teaches these men how to stay or get into shape so that they can conquer the mountains of Colorado, rather than be conquered by them.
Delve into the practicality, spirituality, and naturalism that comes with mastering the art of hunting on this episode of The Johnny King Show.
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- James’ Business. (3:13)
- The Science of Hunting. (8:42)
- The circle of life. (14:11)
- Giving honor to the fallen. (18:53)
- What’s the purpose behind killing? (24:00)
- Touching base with James. (28:31)

Getting Through Tough Times
When life throws you curveballs, you need to adapt.
Many of you may be struggling to reach for the lives you want to live. Whether it’s your family, job, or something else slowing you down, you need to take a moment to reassess how you’re going about your days and nights.
No, this isn’t a talk about habits. This is a discussion about being resourceful.
Unlike a poorly thought out puzzle, there’s almost always a way out of the situation you’re in. I did not get where I am today by beating my head against the wall hoping it would break. Instead, I talked with my friends, hired a coach or two, and got to work. Eventually I was able to scale the wall, because I had the tools to do it.
In the case that you’re facing less of a wall and more of a pitcher who likes to peg you with curveballs (and the refs aren’t doing anything about it), change it up. Play dirty against your situation. That might look like talking with your friends or getting honest with your spouse about what you want in life.
It might look like taking a calculated risk for the first time in your life.
I probably shouldn’t give you the whole pie here, so if you want to learn my secret to getting through tough times and being resourceful, be sure to check out this episode.
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- Why meditation? (1:07)
- Down the rabbit hole of self-hate. (3:31)
- Experiencing failure. (6:32)
- If you don’t have what you want, is it because of resources? (10:28)
- Being resourceful. (14:17)
- Crowdsourcing your challenges. (16:55)

Making 2021 Your Best Year Yet
You can’t make positive changes until you change your energy.
I know, I know. Most people don’t like absolutes (I’m one of those people). However, this time, I mean it. How often do we fall into new or habitual bad patterns and rituals? How often do we find ourselves suffering and wishing we had something different/more/better?
When we fall into this spot, we have to get real with ourselves and check our energy.
This year has been blanketed with fear, loss, and uncertainty… which is the perfect catalyst for negativity and bad energy. What can you do to change that? Well, it starts with making some intentional shifts in your life and habits.
For me, it was picking up meditation for the first time in years. After attending a Dr. Joe Dispenza retreat recently, I’ve integrated meditation into my daily routine, and received piercing clarity for how I want to operate and launch into next year.
Let’s find out what you can do to make 2021 your best year yet.
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- Using feelings for change. (0:33)
- Working through your emotional addictions. (3:53)
- Reading the label on the jar. (7:31)
- Going after what it is you really want. (11:03)
- Live YOUR life. Not the lives of others. (13:58)
- Reigning over your emotions. (16:47)

Courage & Compassion with Christine Hassler
Let’s dig into your emotional suppression.
Let me introduce Christine Hassler to you: she thrives on intuition, compassion, and being a “human detective.” Early in her life, she became a serial overachiever. And as she slammed head-first into burnout in her mid 20s, Christine went from Hollywood agent to personal coach.
And it all started with a book: 20 Something, 20 Everything: A Quarter-life Woman’s Guide to Balance and Direction.
As she’s challenged herself to grow and figure out who she desires to be, Christine has come into her own by asking the biggest question possible… “Why?”
Today she supports men AND women in learning how to integrate their awareness of what needs to be repaired in their lives. She works to equip us to help others to be happy, and her process begins with uncovering our personal emotional suppression.
Are you ready to get to the root of everything? Listen to our revealing conversation!
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- None better than Tony Robbins and Christine Hassler. (1:26)
- Helping women attract their King. (9:14)
- Getting stuck in an endless loop of emotion. (17:26)

Why You MUST Create Urgency
We’ve all got the same basic fears.
The fear of running out of time is powerful… for making you choke under pressure. How many times have you looked up and realize you’ve lost out on HOURS? What about that feeling like your summers evaporate before you can do anything with them?
Perhaps your fear of running out of time keeps you fighting a losing battle against yourself and you’ll be trapped in a cycle of always wishing you had more time. I’ve been there, and yet somewhere along the way I realized that we need this fear to function.
Well, we need it in a different form: urgency.
This is a fairly nuanced topic, and I won’t do it justice right here (though the episode is where it’s at, check it out). The gist of how we use urgency properly is to give ourselves motivation to get our work done. Urgency helps add just enough pressure to our decision making and actions to keep plowing ahead.
So if you want to dive into using urgency as fuel for your success, you’ll want to take a few intentional moments to listen to what I’ve got to say.
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- The “not enough’s” = lack of urgency. (0:47)
- A sense of urgency is needed! (4:35)
- A little pressure is good for the soul. (7:45)
- How can you create artificial leverage? (11:02)
- Action forward always trumps your fears. (14:03)
