Becoming Kings
Becoming Kings Podcast is for any man pursuing greater abundance and fulfillment in life, especially when he knows he’s not living up to his greatest potential. “What does it take to be powerful, purpose-driven and fulfilled?” It means becoming a King. It means doing the difficult work of breaking down the old masculine paradigms and becoming whole, healthy, and trustworthy. In order for men to move into this King energy, they need a guide. A way out of the old ways of being a man of oppression, repression, and aggression and instead, walking a path toward becoming a King; a man of strength, clarity, and fulfillment. This podcast is that guide and it starts here!
Just DO It!
Here’s my biggest podcasting secret…
Just flippin’ do it already. No, seriously.
I’m one of those people who gets sucked into analysis paralysis, I get in my own head, and whenever that happens I’m usually sunk. So, that’s part of the reason why I say “Just do it.”
The other reason is a bit more complicated.
I found out the hard way that trying to capture my charisma and energy through a script was problematic. I hated the idea of a podcast because I basically thought they were nothing more than just long informational pieces. So when I finally decided to go for it…
I knew I had to do it the Johnny King way. Here’s to 99 episodes and 101 more (at least!).
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- What have you been putting off? (1:03)
- What’s holding YOU back? (4:21)
- The courage to use your voice! (8:03)
- This isn’t an easy process to grow into. (11:57)
- Stop playing small. Go for it! (15:04)

Why Coping Mechanisms Are No Bueno
Coping mechanisms stall positive growth.
If we’re running from our pain then we’re going to find ourselves running out time to live.
Sit with that for a moment. We’ve all got pains and hurts that drive us to isolate ourselves from people who care about us. It’s often in these moments of loneliness and isolation that our minds choose to find any way to reject pain, rather than to seek out pleasure or positivity.
This topic has been on my mind recently because of my discussion with Scott Pinyard during my recent virtual Meeting of Men event. We talked at length about addiction, coping mechanisms, and how long-time pain can dictate how we make decisions in life.
The quality of our lives are informed by the quality of our habits and relationships, which is why we need to do all we can to find positive ways to cope with our pain!
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- A Powerful Meeting of Men. (0:46)
- Starting Strong, Finishing Weak. (3:46)
- What motivates us? (8:58)
- Rules + Stoptional. (13:15)
- Our meaning making machine! (16:54)
- Be RELENTLESS! (20:08)

Understanding Your Privilege with Jason King
He’s like the Dos Equis guy… but somehow way cooler.
Meet my cousin Jason King: Doula. Feminist. Dad support.
You know, everything you’d come to expect from a King family member which is to say, “Not what you expected.”

Jason lives in a tiny home but has a larger than life personality. As you know, I’m not into giving too much away about my interviews… be prepared for us to talk about everything! Being a doula, serving others, digging into racism, magic mushrooms, and way, way more than you bargained for.

Netflix & Chillin’
Everybody across the street has a massive TV in their living room.
Each night when I close up my house and shut my blinds I see the luxury apartments across the street… and sometimes I just watch people exist for a few minutes.
Every apartment I can see into has a massive TV that each resident sits in front of for a few hours every night. From my view it’s always fascinating to see what people are watching or doing. Reflecting on this daily occurrence has me thinking about how I spend my evenings, and how I view resting.
As with all things, I think moderation is key. How we rest can waste our time, and ultimately leave us feeling dissatisfied as we look back. However, sometimes we work way too hard and don’t rest enough, which also leaves us feeling dissatisfied as we look back.
So in this episode I want to chat about the infamous Netflix and chill… and why relaxing in moderation can be the key to a happier life!
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- Windows into the world. (1:12)
- What are you currently watching? (6:08)
- What is moderation? (11:19)
- Taking a dime from a dollar. (19:29)
- Creating healthy entertainment boundaries. (22:51)
- Riding the struggle bus. (16:54)

Feel the Feels
We’ve all got defense mechanisms that protect us from pain…
However they’re leaving you emotionally flatlined. We have so much to celebrate and be joyful for! Sounds like it’s time for us to put away the fear of pain and take action. What happens when we experience long-term “emotional flatlining”?
Well, a few things:
We find ourselves increasingly isolated and lonely, stuck going through the motions, and satisfying our egos. Now, I want to be clear: these feelings are common, and in a lot of ways, normal. When we’re stuck in this cycle, it’s increasingly difficult to manage and we can get bogged down.
I don’t think we should sit around beating ourselves up. However, if we can reframe how we see ourselves, our pain, and the value of our lives we can turn this thing around. The best way to do this is to experience things.
Listen for some of my reflections about overcoming my emotional flatlining and where you can take your life.
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- Audio journaling. (1:25)
- What in life brings you joy? (6:51)
- Adventures from the open road. (11:48)

Defeating Alcoholism with Scott Pinyard
The journey of sobriety starts with a change in your mental state.
Joining me on the podcast for this interview is a man named Scott Pinyard. He’s the head addictions counselor with This Naked Mind… and his job is to help people recontextualize how they think about addiction and alcohol.
When we think about addiction, we tend to jump right into negative thoughts. This is because there’s a lot of shame, self-loathing, and anger that gets wrapped up in our neural pathways when we’re addicted to something.
We think it’s easier to just shame ourselves out of it, however Scott has a different method, one that makes the journey of sobriety enjoyable and uplifting.
Especially when it comes to alcohol, we have to acknowledge that it’s addictive. That’s it. Everybody has the capacity to become addicted to it, and once you internalize that there’s no more comparison to someone else. It’s just you and the alcohol.
Tune in to this episode of TJKS to dive deep into the power of grace-based addiction counseling.
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- This Naked Mind. (1:33)
- Associations & drinking. (10:11)
- Grace based methodology. (18:51)
- Subconscious beliefs. (29:39)
- The compound effect of small choices. (38:24)

Stop Beating Yourself Up
How many times do you get overwhelmed by expectations?
If you’re like a past version of myself, probably pretty often. One of the truths we have to internalize as we grow, is that expectations can get out of hand.
When we set the bar too high for ourselves, we’re setting ourselves up to fail. And if we have way too many lower expectations we simply run out of energy and time to meet them all. Either way, we do have to have expectations to meet… we simply have to pace ourselves and set ourselves up to succeed.
There will always be challenges, and there will certainly be times where we fail spectacularly. However, if you know me well, you know that I believe in failing forward. As long as you’re ready to learn from your mistakes, failure can be used as fuel to keep putting shots up!
We have to remember to keep the hoop in range though 😉 So, if you’ve been struggling with beating yourself up, learn how to dial back your expectations and fail forward in this episode.
In this episode you’ll learn about…
- Don’t start unless you’re positive of success. (1:00)
- Rolling the dice & failing forward. (4:25)
- What am I learning from my shortcomings? (5:07)
- Taking a risk at entrepreneurship. (9:31)
- What would you do if you could not fail? (12:50)
- Envision what life would look like without limitations. (16:19)

Finding Your Frequency with Dan Houck
Learn to listen to that little voice inside.
I know for some of you it might sound crazy… but that voice inside you is almost always right.
How do we find it though? Well, you’ve got to cut out the extra noise, and listen for that gentle voice that’s nudging you forward. Don’t believe me? Then you should hear it from my good friend, Dan Houck.
Once a guy from Arizona who worked in engineering, he’s now living in Denver and coaching folks to live more fulfilled lives! Raised Catholic, he was always very skeptical about listening to that inner voice. Yet one day, he decided to listen and it changed his life.
One of the deepest lessons he learned as he began to listen to the voice was to be as kind to himself as he was to others. Because at the end of the day, our wellbeing and our happiness needs to be up to us, not others.
Learn how to live a life of putting shots up and being true to yourself with Dan Houck.
In this episode you’ll learn about…
